We run a variety of youth development programmes...
Youth Council
We are employed by Kaikōura District Council to coordinate the Kaikōura Youth Council. The Kaikōura youth council is a group of young people, open to 12 - 24 yr olds. KYC runs events for others in the community, such as the bienniel Kaikōura Youth Awards, and activities during Youth Week in May each year. They also have representatives on community groups and trusts, in order to ensure youth voice is present in the decisions that are made for our community. Their main goal is for Kaikōura youth to be optimistic, confident and make valued contributions. They meet fortnightly at either Te Hā O Mātauranga, 14 Ludstone Road or the Kaikōura District Council chambers. For more information about KYC visit their website: kaikourayouthcouncil.org.nz. To get in touch email kkyouthcouncil@gmail.com or get in touch with their coordinator; Petra Jellyman on 027 201 7638, or email admin@kaikoura.link

Youth Employability Programmes
We are changing up how we deliver our Youth Employability Programmes for 2025. These programmes come from the Mayor's Taskforce for Jobs funding; to find out more about employment opportunities, and the Mayor's Taskforce for Jobs visit here. Keep an eye out in 2025 for our upcoming YEP opportunities!
Our Youth Employability Programmes (YEP) are all about the soft skills that relate to how you work. These skills include how you interact with others, solve problems and manage your work.
We have previously offered four different programmes:
- Tahi Rangatahi - For youth who are not in education.
- Kare Toa - A continuation of our first Tahi Rangatahi group, where the participants could continue to connect and grow as a group and individuals.
- ASAP (After School Aspiration Programme) - This is a ten week programme for youth aged 12-14. This programme involved writing a CV, setting up practice interviews and more. The programme was fun, practical and activity based - we included vocational pathways, work experience and exploration.
- We also ran a weekly group with senior students at Kaikōura High School.
Fishing Club
We host a fishing club - run by young people, for young people. Fishing Club Spends time doing environmental work, learning about the environment, hanging out with good people, and fishing!
